Finding Jens Hortlings's new album is released today
Finding Jens Hortling released their self-titled debut album today (March 27) through the Kuopio-based label Humu Records. The album is available both on vinyl and digitally.
The collaboration between singer Jens Hortling (The Toxics) and musician-producer Lauri Eloranta (Damn Seagulls) breaks new musical ground for both artists and marks a return to composing for Eloranta. The band, which performs cinematic alternative rock, draws heavily on influences from the 1990s while also nodding to earlier decades of rock music.
Ten years ago, Hortling played Eloranta the first song he had ever composed on his own—an encounter that planted the seed of a solo record in the producer’s mind:
"I was incredibly excited and inspired by the idea that people would never expect this kind of stuff from Jens."
Hortling continues:
"A few years later we met and discussed what the record might contain. After a couple of hours of brainstorming, we already had five song ideas."
However, due to the pair’s other commitments, the project was put on hold. In 2021, Hortling played Eloranta cassette tapes featuring recordings of his late grandfather speaking and sharing memories.
“Those tapes somehow freed our imagination and opened a gateway to the past. It became completely natural for the songs to jump from era to era and explore an entire family tree.” Eloranta says.
The eight-track album has already yielded two well-received singles, Cold Wind Blows and Blinds. The band also released a live video of Cold Wind Blows, recorded with a large orchestra.
